The Future of Shia Expansion in Africa: Between Reality and Challenges

Introduction:

The spread of Shiism in Africa has become an increasingly prominent religious phenomenon, with the presence of Shia communities mainly concentrated in West African countries such as Nigeria, Senegal, and Ghana. Since the late twentieth century, Shiism has visibly expanded across the continent, supported by educational, missionary, and cultural activities. Although Shias remain a minority among African Muslims, their influence is growing through the establishment of schools and scientific institutions, in addition to external support from countries like Iran. Considering the future trajectory of Shiism in Africa, its expansion could have dire consequences due to its negative impact on the strength and unity of Muslims, as it tends to foster division, hatred, and the fragmentation of social bonds.
