With the rise in global demand for alternative and sustainable energy sources, uranium has become increasingly important as a tool for reshaping the map of geopolitical influence. In this context, Africa has emerged as one of the most important continents rich in uranium reserves, as countries such as Niger, Namibia, and South Africa host some of the largest mines in the world, which has made them a focus of competition between major powers seeking to secure their nuclear fuel resources. Thus, uranium is no longer merely an economic resource, but has turned into a strategic pressure card related to issues of national security, energy policies and international balances.
Geographical distribution of uranium
Uranium is unevenly distributed in Africa, with its reserves and production concentrated in a limited number of countries that have become major players in the global nuclear energy market. This distribution reflects the strategic nature of African resources, as it brings together countries considered major producers, such such as Niger and Namibia, as well as others possessing promising reserves that remain underexploited:
Niger: Niger is considered one of the most prominent global producers of uranium, as it owns major mines such as (Arlit) and (Akouta), in addition to the Imouraren project, which is considered one of the largest reserves discovered in the world despite its faltering exploitation Niger’s uranium plays a pivotal role in feeding French nuclear reactors, making the country an essential part of the European energy security equation. However, this strategic resource has remained linked to structural problems, most notably over-reliance on foreign companies, as well as the security and political challenges facing the Sahel region, which has made uranium a pressure card in recent geopolitical balances.[1]
Namibia: Namibia tops the list of African countries rich in uranium, and ranks third in the world, with its reserves estimated at about 470,000 tons, making it a decisive player in the nuclear energy industry, and Windhoek includes 3 major huge mines such as (Rössing), (Husab), and (Langer Heinrich), which made the country at the heart of foreign investments, especially Chinese On the other hand, Namibian uranium represents a strategic resource that is not limited to the economic dimension only, but is also linked to international policies related to nuclear energy, and although Namibian production is relatively stable compared to other countries, the issue of diversifying international partners and enhancing national benefit from revenues remains one of the most prominent challenges facing the country in managing this vital resource.[2]
South Africa:Uranium mining in South Africa is an activity more closely linked to the gold industry than an independent activity, as the (Witwatersrand Basin) was the most important center for uranium production, as it was extracted from the 1950s until the late 1990s as a byproduct of gold mines, It is estimated that this region alone produced approximately 150,000 tons of refined uranium between 1952 and 1998. The (Karoo Basin) has also witnessed exploratory attempts since the 1960s after oil exploration teams found indicators of uranium, but these projects remained in the study stages due to economic and environmental challenges. In recent years, major mining companies such as Sibanye-Stillwater have begun to re-exploit remaining resources by processing mining (tailings) at sites such as Cooke and Beatrix, and despite these efforts, South Africa’s uranium sector continues to face challenges related to high extraction costs and environmental and public health problems resulting from radiological activities, which has made its production less stable compared to other African countries such as Niger and Namibia.[3]
Gabon: Gabon’s history with uranium is mainly linked to the (Mounana) mine, which began operating in the 1960s, with its total production until its closure in 1999 reaching about 28,000 tons of uranium, although this activity has now stopped due to the depletion of the mine and the decline in productivity in the late 1990s, in addition to the environmental impacts and health deterioration caused by radioactive contamination resulting from the uranium mining process Gabon remains one of the most prominent African countries that has had historical experience in exploiting this wealth. United States of America: The United States of America seeks to strengthen its presence in the African uranium file based on considerations of energy security and national security together, as uranium represents a vital element in the operation of its nuclear plants, and it also views Africa as a strategic arena for securing uranium resources away from the growing Russian and Chinese hegemony, in addition to supporting transparency and resource governance initiatives through programs such as (Power Africa) and the US government’s financing and development institutions, and Washington is also employing its diplomatic and military tools through the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) to secure the stability of mineral-rich regions, but the biggest challenge is direct competition with the most established powers on the continent, such as France and Russia, This makes it focus on balancing the influence of its opponents and ensuring the continued flow of African uranium into global energy markets.[6]
France: It is one of the most prominent international players involved in the conflict over African uranium, and the main reason for this is due to the colonial legacy, which is an integral part of the historical memory of many African countries, as Paris relied heavily on uranium imports from Africa, especially Niger, to operate its nuclear plants, which provide about 70% of its electricity needs, through the French company “Orano”, which operates several mines in the country With the rise of Russian and Chinese influence, France’s battle to maintain its uranium quota is no longer just about securing energy, but has become part of a broader struggle to reshape the balance of power on the African continent. China: Beijing is a key participant in the race to control African uranium, viewing it as a key part of its overall energy security strategy and strengthening its geopolitical position. Beijing is increasingly relying on nuclear energy as part of its plans to transition to a low-carbon economy, seeking to build dozens of nuclear reactors over the coming decades, making securing uranium resources a national security issue for it To this end, China has doubled its investments in the African mining sector through companies such as China General Nuclear (CGN), which has purchased strategic stakes in major mines in Namibia, such as (Husab), one of the world’s largest mines, to ensure long-term supplies. It has also leveraged its financing tools through the Belt and Road Initiative to link infrastructure investments with energy and mining projects, giving it dual economic and political influence.[8]
Russia: Playing an increasingly important role in this conflict, as part of its strategy to enhance influence on the continent through nuclear energy tools, Moscow relies on (Rosatom) as a major arm to expand its presence, as its activity was not limited to exploring and mining uranium only, but extended to include signing long-term agreements for cooperation in building nuclear reactors for peaceful purposes, and supplying African countries with nuclear fuel and the necessary technology Russia has strengthened its position, especially in countries such as Namibia, South Africa, and Nigeria, through formal partnerships and bilateral agreements supported by strategic interests related to vital resources.[9]
In conclusion, it can be said that uranium in Africa is no longer just a traditional natural resource, but has become a central element in the equation of global geopolitical competition, as major powers such as France, the United States, China and Russia seek to consolidate their influence by investing in mining, concluding nuclear agreements, and using it as a pressure card in international conflicts. This competition reveals that Africa is no longer a peripheral in the international system, but rather a strategic arena in which considerations of energy security and economic development intersect. National sovereignty, which redraws the balance of power at the regional and international levels, and thus the future of the African continent has become dependent on its ability to manage its nuclear resources effectively, and employ them to enhance its negotiating position in the global system, instead of being merely an arena for a struggle for influence between the major powers.
